If you are one with abandonment issues, then you need to realize this guy would probably be the last one to leave you, if all you say is true about his feelings for you. Seems to me you actually have a real trust issue. And if he's as close as you say, that should not be a worry for you either. It sounds to me like this guy would do anything at all to have you be his for a true love affair that would last forever. Best friends can make the best couples and best marriages.
