I stopped giving money to my surrogate son. did I do the right thing?

I loved him as my real son but he didn't want to spend any time with me. Never even wanted to talk to me on the phone and yet he kept demanding money from me. Two weeks ago I foolishly listened and gave him almost 500 dollars. He never saw me as a dad, he only saw me as a means to get money. Did I do the right thing by refusing to give him money? I should add that he didn't live with me (refused to live with me or let me adopt him) and is 17 and is about to be a dad in a few months.
